WPIX: MTA Public Hearing Tonight, Cooper Union: Half of Manhattan’s Subway Booths to Close?
MTA considering closing over 50% of their Subway booths as a cost-cutting measure. Residents speak out tonight.
From WPIX:
The MTA is planning to permanently close or reduce the hours of more than half of the subway station booths and kiosks in Manhattan, and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is calling for opposition.
The cost-cutting move by the MTA would affect 49 of 86 subway stations throughout the city, directly affecting the safety of subway riders Stringer said in a press release. Stringer, along with Assembly Member Wright and TWU Local 100 President John Samuelson, are urging New Yorkers to join them at MTA public hearings on July 13 and 14.
Following a public hearing inside Cooper Union in the East Village, the board approved a 2.25 increase for one-year lease renewals and a 4.5 percent increase on two-year lease renewals. Tenants who attended the meeting argued for a rent freeze, saying they already pay enough.
