Louis 649, the cocktail bar on 9th Street known for its industry insider tastings, is closing for a paint job, says owner Zachary Sharaga.
It will reopen in early October, in time for its sixth anniversary gala, slated for Thursday, October 28.
Louis is located at 649 E 9th St.
Local restaurants, including Australian eatery Tuck Shop, will be on hand for St. Marks Place Block Party this weekend. Get ready for the meat pie eating contest.

At the St. Marks Place block party, July 31 from 2 to 6 p.m. on St. Marks Place between First Avenue and Avenue A, there will be food and beverages for sale, music and, at 5:30 p.m., a meat-pie-eating contest sponsored by the Tuck Shop, an Australian cafe at 115 St. Marks Place. Proceeds from the party benefit George Jackson Academy, a boys’ school on the block. Food from East Village restaurants will be sold at another block party July 31 on East Ninth Street between Avenues B and C from noon to 5 p.m. The proceeds benefit the 9BC Tompkins Square block association.

A bevy of ethnic festivals will take place this weekend. On Saturday, the Cool Japan Festival in the East Village (Fourth Avenue between Eighth and Tenth Streets), from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. will offer sample dishes from a number of restaurants in the neighborhood.
